Signs You Need Water Heater Repair
Naturally, the clearest sign that your water heater needs some attention is that you’ll have less hot water. That isn’t necessarily the only thing you’ll notice, though; there are quite a few other signs you might notice beforehand.
- Discolored water. If you notice rust in your hot water (not necessarily your cold water!) something has worn out and needs to be replaced.
- Leaking water from your tank. There is a pressure release valve on the side of your tank to prevent dangerous tank failure. If this valve drips water, it can mean one of several things: the valve is not closed properly, the valve is failing, or your tank has excessive pressure built up inside that it’s letting out. Regardless of which is true, you should have a professional look at it.
- Unusually noisy operation. It’s normal for your water heater to make some sounds, but if you notice they’re unusually loud or different from normal, something may be out of place.
Visible rust. Rust on the outside of your water heater’s tank is cause for concern; these are weak spots that could fail if left untreated.

Maintaining Your Water Heater
You don’t need to wait until your water heater breaks down to get a professional to look at it. Regular preventive maintenance could save you a lot of time and money – not to mention convenience.
Water heater maintenance tasks include:
-
- Flushing the tank. This can help prevent sediment buildup that could cause malfunctions. It’s just what it sounds like – completely emptying the tank to get rid of the buildup.
- Replacing the anode rod. This is a “sacrificial” piece of metal placed inside the tank to corrode in place of the tank itself. It’s made of a more reactive metal than the rest of the tank and will need to be replaced every one to three years.
- Testing valves and electrical connections. Your pressure release valve will be tested to make sure it works properly, and electrical connections will be tightened as needed to secure them.
Remember that your water heater can be dangerous if damaged, which is why you should always have a professional handle all aspects of your water heater repair and upkeep.
Tankless Water Heater Repair
Many people choose tankless water heaters for their increased energy efficiency and limitless hot water – but that goes out the window if it stops working! Tankless water heaters can usually last around 20 years if properly maintained, so if your tank is younger than that, a repair is probably a good choice. The Clog Pro team is on hand to help no matter what type of heater you have – whether it’s gas, electric, or tankless.
